Stormy Day at Coffenbury Lake

Dark storms loom over the dark waters of Coffenbury Lake, it's quiet waters shinning on the shores of the Pacific Ocean in Fort Stevens State Park. Wind roars, thunder booms to match the crashing waves, and rain dances on the troubled waters, before calm once more settles on this idyllic haven.

Fishing boat crossing the Graveyard of the Pacific

A lonely fishing boat plies the turbulent waters of the Columbia River Bar, also known as the Graveyard of the Pacific due to how many ships this wild stretch of water has claimed over the centuries. Plumes of salt laden spray shoot skyward from the ragged waves, and fierce currents tug insistently on the keels of all vessels that pass through this gauntlet of terror.

Captured with the Nikon Z9 and Nikkor Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S. I shot in DX crop mode and used cropping creatively in Adobe Premiere. I used a Benro Tortoise tripod with a gimbal head to achieve smooth and stable panning shots.

King Tide in Puget Sound

The king tide rolled into Puget Sound last week, bringing with it record high waters and impressive currents that flowed like rivers through the passages and channels of the Salish Sea. Debris and lost boats were scattered along the winding reaches of the Sound.

Pileated Woodpecker hunting for bugs

The Pileated Woodpecker is the majestic, bug eating giant of the Pacific Northwest. This spectacular bird's iconic call is evocative of the deep and mysterious temperate rainforests that cloak the mountains emerald feet, and this ruby crest of this king of the deep woods wears a startling crown of ruby.

Pullen Creek forest fire burning at night

The Pullen Creek forest fire near Eco Park, Kid Valley, and Mt. St. Helens was one of dozens started by irresponsible slash burning in the Pacific Northwest this month. Such explosive fire danger is a direct consequence of the climate crisis and poor forestry practices. 2022 has been dangerously and unusually dry, and despite recent rain this normally soggy region remains a tinderbox waiting to explode.
