Laowa 100mm F2.8 2:1 CA-Dreamer Super Macro Lens First Impressions Review

Macro lenses get you closer, and the Laowa 100mm F2.8 2:1 CA Dreamer is a super macro lens that will get you closer still. This is the first 100mm lens to feature a magnification ratio of 2:1, and with this extreme macro capability you gain access to a whole new miniature landscape of photographic capabilities.

This is also one of the cheapest macro lenses out there at just $450 - a bargain compared to competing lenses from Canon and Nikon which cost about double that price. You don't get Autofocus or  other electronic features (except in the Canon version which features electronic aperture control), but with a macro lens that isn't such a big deal. When shooting super close ups you usually need to manual focus anyway.

Over the past week I've been testing out this lens, and so far I've been very impressed by it's wonderful image quality and excellent build quality. The only notable issues I've encountered are the occasional appearance of heptagonal bokeh that occasionally appears in images due to the 7 bladed aperture ring on the Nikon version that I own, and the short throw of the focus ring which can make very fine focus difficult some times. However, the focus ring is well damped, and very smooth to turn, so the short throw distance isn't too much of a problem. One advantage of the short focus throw is that you can switch between macro and non-macro subjects more quickly.

I'll have to use this lens for awhile longer to give it a full review, but so far I'm loving it!
